Independence Day Calendar Out

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released the calendar of events marking Liberia's 164th Independence Anniversary which climaxes in Voinjama, Lofa County on Tuesday, July 26, 2011.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, activities for this year's celebration begin with a Golden Image Award Dinner at the Ball Room of the Monrovia City Hall on Tuesday, July 19, 2011.

The Dinner is being hosted by Liberia Crusaders for Peace. This will be followed by the Golden Image Award Night on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at the same venue.

On Thursday, July 21, 2011, an Investiture Ceremony takes place at the C. Cecil Dennis, Jr. Auditorium, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who is also Grand Master of the Orders of Distinction, will confer Distinctions on a number of Liberian Citizens and Distinguished Personalities.

Among personalities expected to be conferred Distinctions are the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan; former Chief Justice of Liberia, Cllr. Henry Reed Cooper; Vice President of Coco Cola International, Mr. Alexander Cummings; Centenarian (105 years old), Madam Tuma Vamplet; and former Director, Swiss Development Agency/Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Walter Furst.

Others are a Lawyer and Senior Citizen, Cllr. Joseph Augustus Sekum; Royesville (Octogenarian), Ora Wede Levell; Business Woman (91 years old), Mother Hadja Kumba Diakity Kaba; Nonagenarian, Mr. William Saba Brownell; and a Teacher, Mrs. Famata Morris.

On Friday, July 22, 2011, Independence Celebrations shift to Zorzor City, Lofa County where a Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service commemorating the Liberia's 164th Independence Anniversary takes place at the Zorzor Central Mosque.

The Service will be hosted by the Lofa United Muslim of Liberia (LUMOL) in collaboration with the National Muslim Council of Liberia.

En route to Voinjama City, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will dedicate some development projects in Salayea and Zorzor Districts.

In Salayea District, she will dedicate, among other projects, the Commissioner's residence/Administrative Building, the Salayea-Zolowo, Zorzor-Gbongay roads, and the Salayea Central High School. While in Zorzor District, she will dedicate the Mosque in Zorzor City, Curran Hospital/Nursing School, Small Arms Control Building, among others.

On Saturday, July 23, 2011, Madam Johnson Sirleaf will dedicate more projects in Voinjama District and Voinjama City Center. In Voinjama District, she will dedicate the Tennebu Air Strip Terminal, the Vezela Guest House, and a school constructed by Plan-Liberia in Koiyaumai.

In the City Center, the President will dedicate several projects including the Presidential Palace, Lofa Community College, Voinjama City Hall, 10th Judicial Circuit Court Building, Forest Development Authority building, a Youth Center, National Social Security Guest House, the Ministries of Postal Affairs and Labor offices, National Housing units.

She will also visit Quardu Gbondi District and dedicate the Commissioner's Office in Sarmodu, a primary school constructed by Plan-Liberia in Sarmodu and the Gbondi Farmers Cooperative Warehouse.

Youth activities will take place in Voinjama City on Saturday, July 23, 2011. They include a Youth Indoor Program which will be followed by a soccer match between Lofa and Nimba counties in the afternoon.

On Sunday, July 24, 2011, an Intercessory Prayer and Worship Service takes place at the Voinjama Free Pentecostal Church where the Senior Pastor of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Rev. James McCay will deliver the Sermon.

On the eve of Liberia's 164th Independence Anniversary, Monday, July 25, 2011, the Liberian leader will dedicate more development projects in Voinjama City, Kolahun, Foya Statutory and Vahun districts.

On Tuesday, July 26, 2011, Liberia's Independence Day, troops of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) will hoist the National Flag at 06:00 a.m. The Liberian President, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia, will inspect the troops at 08:10 a.m. followed by a March Pass-in-Review at 08:30 a.m. The AFL will then parade through the principal streets of Voinjama City.

The Official Programme for the observance of this year's Anniversary begins at 11:00 a.m. at the Voinjama City Hall. The highlight of the programme will be the oration that will be delivered by a native of Lofa County, Mrs. Garmai Estella Korboi.

President Johnson Sirleaf, Grand Master of the Orders of Distinction, will also confer Distinctions on some Liberians and Distinguished Personalities during the programme including Liberia's Vice President, Hon. Joseph N. Boakai; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. J. Alex Tyler; the President Pro-Tempore, Senator Cletus Wortorson; and National Orator, July 26, 2011, Mrs. Garmai Estella Korboi.

Others are the Acting City Mayor, Monrovia City Corporation, Ms. Mary Broh; Chairman & Founder, HEART Foundation, Dr. James Adama Sirleaf; Honorary Consul General of India and Humanitarian Worker in Liberia, Mr. U. S. Sachdeva (Jetty); an Octogenarian, Classroom Teacher, Principal, Lawalazu Public School, Mr. Henry Baysah Sellie, Senior Aide-de-camp to the President, General Jeremiah Hinneh ; Mama Edith Nahwelee; a Business Woman, Madam Milla Mawpian; and a Public Servant, Mr. David Doe.
